Summary of Discussion

Q1. Can you share an example of a particularly powerful or effective application of nature-based Solutions that you think has potential to be scaled up? Please share any examples of what you have seen being addressed well, what exciting new ideas you would like to see pursued, or any cases where it has not been executed well.

  • Mostly hear about corporations re-wilding their green areas or supporting tree planting campaigns. But they sound to me as the equivalent of printing on both sides of the paper
  • NbS projects within the agriculture sector seem ripe for scaling given the farmer's economic interests.
  • NbS can help address serving as a natural adaptation mechanism, for example: heat (urban, wild fires) / intense precipitation (flash floods, flooding, landslides) /  coastal (sea level rise, storm surges, erosion)

Q2. What are the potential barriers inhibiting companies from doing more around nature-based solutions?

  • Lack of a mechanism to put a value to Natural Capital and therefore underestimating the impact of not investing in nature-based solutions
  • Lack of understanding and knowledge of NBS and how it fits with the current systems and way of doing thing
  • Insufficient knowledge of the effect and science of NBS is a barrier
  • Lack of internationally adopted protocols and standards
  • Different roles in talking to the government

Q3. As you may know, there is a significant gap in funding for nature-based solutions, what are some potential ideas for boosting investment?

  • Agriculture seen as the most critical sector in advancing nature-based solutions (pool question mention)
  • Stacking of co-benefits to adaptation could improve real ROI understanding and show the value of NB projects
  • Developing clear business cases/case studies to demonstrate to companies the business and financial incentives for implementing NbS
  • Must engage private sector funding as Governments do not have enough capital to fund what is needed

Q4. Our final question: What are examples of the best collaborations or partnerships around nature that exist?

  • Business for Nature
  • Multi-sectoral interdisciplinary communities of practice all over the globe
  • TNFD has lots of potential!
  • human capital SDGs, stakeholders and investors

Final quotes...

  • 2021 is a greatly critical year for NBS: Ensuring that goals are clear and aligned
  • Maintain and stretch the momentum Nature/Climate and Development
  • Integrity, Integration/collaboration, and Impact
