About Me: As Chief Scientist at ITT, Roger is responsible for ensuring the scientific rigor of the Institute’s pipeline of innovative technologies to reduce global poverty. He also leads research on strategic interventions in the fields of sanitation, agriculture and water security, to enable long-term well-being of human society. He is an author of the 50 Breakthroughs report that identifies critical scientific and technological advances needed for global development (50breakthroughs.org).

Roger’s professional experience spans from scientific research in laboratory and field sites, to emergency humanitarian relief in refugee camps.

He is a Guest Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, USA. Formerly a research scientist at LBNL, he led prospective life-cycle system analysis of the environmental, energy and economic implications of eventual large-scale deployment of emerging technologies.

Roger is also Adjunct Professor at Linnaeus University in Växjö, Sweden. As part of the Sustainable Built Environment research group, he compares alternate development pathways for energy systems, forest management and the built environment.

He worked for over a decade managing refugee relief activities in African countries including Angola, Mozambique and Sudan, where he was responsible for the design, implementation and evaluation of emergency humanitarian efforts.

Roger’s educational background includes PhD in Environmental Science from Mid Sweden University, MSc in Forestry from University of Idaho, and BSc in Civil Engineering from Northwestern University.
